Daniel Craig Movies, Part Four

2005 Munich Steve
This is the movie that made Barbara Broccoli decide on Craig as Bond, or so I’ve heard. He plays one of the members of an Israeli assassin squad, sent out in retaliation after the murders of the Israeli Olympians in Munich.

He certainly displaced Bond like qualities when the squad killed the Dutch hooker that had set up one of their own. Eyes blazing blue, he had no problem shooting her in the chest. His face was completely dispassionate and merciless as he followed her around the house boat waiting for her to die.

He displays such good acting in this film. He can really embody his characters. When I watch this movie, I have no doubt that he is a killer to his enemies, and a warm loving friend to the people he cares about.

2005 Archangel Christopher Kelso

Now this movie is a miss to me, and I can’t tell you why. The script is good, the acting is good, but I wasn’t engaged. I think it may be the over acting of one of his co-stars. If you watch this, you’ll know I mean. The story line certainly should be enough. Craig plays Christopher Kelso, Fluke to his friends, who ends up center stage on a plot to place Stalin's secret bastard on the way to seizing control of Russia.

Craig’s acting is quite good, as he runs about Russia, investigating while eluding the Russia police. It’s that damn other actor that ruins it. He makes it seem false. Perhaps, that actor is really a stage actor?

Daniel Craig Movies Part 3

2004 Layer Cake XXXX

This is a really good movie. It’s about a drug dealer (Craig/XXXX) who’s made his “magic” number as to money, and is planning on getting out. However upper management has other ideas. He’s given the task of finding the run away daughter of a guy further up in the food chain. Complication; another drug dealer has used his name in fucking up a deal. Now there’s a hit man after him. He also falls in lust. My, his plate is full.

Craig’s acting is great, as is the story. The look on Craig’s face when the hit man almost nails him, and XXXX (Craig), realizes the trap he has sprung is backfiring is awesome. There’s also some phone sex, and it’s fun to watch Craig squirm in a public setting.

2004 Enduring Love Joe

Okay, this is another movie where it feels a bit strange. The opening and closing scenes are great, it’s the middle part that feels . . . unconnected. Essentially, the story is this, Joe’s on a picnic with his girl friend, a hot air balloon touches down and runs into trouble. Joe and others try to help, one man dies. One of the others, a man, falls in love with Joe and stalks him.

The middle part is about the stalking, basically a series of scenes of Joe discovering the stalker over and over, and reacting increasingly fearfully and angrily towards the stalker. While this is going on, in an emotional reaction, he totally damages his relationship with his girlfriend, by telling her (and everyone else), that love isn’t real, and it’s just biology.

The stalker realizes that he’s never going to get Joe while the girlfriend is around , beats himself up, and goes to her and tells her Joe did it to him. Joe comes home, and finds the stalker and his girlfriend together in the apartment, and the stalker once again tries to tell Joe how they are meant to be together and that it’s the girl friend that’s the problem. And then the stalker stabs her. Joe immediately realizes how much he loves her and employs guile to save her. He tells the stalker he’s right, the girlfriend was the problem and now they can be together. Joe lures him over and gets the knife away from him while KISSING (alas, apparently no frenching) him, and stabs him in the gut. “Aagh,” moans the stalker as he falls out of sight and out of the movie.

The rest of the movie is about Joe trying to make things right for all the people he hurt while freaking out about the stalking.

The acting is good; it’s the storyline in the middle that’s the problem. It’s completely shot from the perspective of Joe discovering the stalker over and over again; there are no scenes to show how the stalker was finding him.

But I liked this movie and would like to see it again.

This way the only way I could get the tweets over here. I'm trying not to freak out about this. Maybe I should put a counter back in. . .

Daniel Craig Movies Part 2

1997 Obsession

I really liked this movie. However as with ALL the English movies I have watched with Daniel Craig in them, the emotional arc feels strange. Let me explain this. Either there’s a different way of showing how an English character feels or I’m getting an edited version. It may be as simple as, (and I haven’t sat down and watched for this) closes up vs. standard shot. I feel like I’m watching a movie pretty much shot by someone with a camera in the same room, not by the cinematographer. So, the results for me are somewhat unsatisfying.

Also the movie ends unresolved. Or maybe that’s just me.

But this is a good movie, and I would recommend it to anyone.

.

1997 The Ice House D.S. Andy McLoughlin

This movie is so good. But the only DVD is region 2. Also the version from the library is edited down to G and I know this because the clips on You-Tube have some of the stuff that was edited out. The only bad thing I can say about it is, when D.S. McLoughlin (Craig) swoons from low blood sugar, it’s NOT good acting. Sorry Daniel, but I laugh every time I see it.

1998 Love Is The Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon George Dyer

This movie once again is shot very differently. Most of the friends’ scenes are shot looking at them though glasses and bottles (in a bar). Everything is viewed distorted, ugly, accept for George Dyer. As the title indicts, this is not a regular movie. It’s more like a collection of vignettes arranged in a chronological manner. But you do get to see Craig naked, before he bulked up for Bond. This is also edited (but not to G). There are clips of the cigarette hitting the skin on You-Tube, but in the version I have, that is replace by just seeing the cigarette in the air.

2000 I Dreamed of Africa Declan Fielding

Either Craig took this part so he could go to Africa or his scenes were edited out, and I am leaning towards the latter, as there is one scene that really doesn’t make sense. Craig plays Declan Fielding, the ranch manager. There is one scene where he brings the wife a microphone so she can talk to her husband on the radio while he is away. But, surprise, the husband is home and Fielding acts like he’s been trying to hit on the wife and has been caught in the act! There are no scenes to support this emotional reaction. So, I’m assuming they have been edited out. He only appears in about four scenes, a very small bit part.

2001 Sword of Honor Guy Crouch

I found this movie rather heart breaking. Essentially Crouch has childish fantasies about being a hero. Through the course of the movie, he’s forced in to seeing how different his belief in honor is from reality, and how no one else is the hero that Guy wants to be, but ends up being lauded as one, while Guy doesn’t. Everyone he cares about dies, sometimes by his own actions. At the end he’s left with the child of his ex-wife’s that he remarried to give the baby a name. I just know he will give the boy his heart (he’s doing so at the end of the movie), and that the biological father will find out about the boy and claim him, and poor Guy will be left with nothing. Apparently this movie is supposed to be darkly humorous.

Craig’s acting is very good in this. I know this because I spent the movie, pleading with Guy to grow up and get with the program.

2002 Sylvia Ted Hughes

This movie is so good. Craig’s acting in it is awesome. His character goes back and forth between talking and reacting. Craig recites a poem very rapidly in this movie, it would have given me nightmares to memorize it and I wonder if all the hand waving Craig does while reciting it is a physical reminder of what to say.

In the movie, Craig’s character becomes still when he has to deal with his wife’s desperate emotions. It’s hard to covey emotion while being perfectly still, but he does it. You know exactly how worried or fearful Hughes is about his wife’s emotional state while being perfectly still. This movie I will buy

The formatting is a little strange because I dragged this over from Word, and it won't let me change it very much. Where's the line break button?

Received my First Comment!

From Rosie, on the March 2009 post on Healthy Way. She wanted to know how I joined (which I didn't) and to e-mail her the information. Unfortunately, I don't have her e-mail, so I left a answering comment underneath hers, and I will repeat it here. . .

Go to a Healthy Way LA office (probably at the nearest LA county hospital) with your pay stubs and show them the stubs. They will then tell you how much you have to pay. I do not know if there is a upper limit on income for this.

I'm sorta freaked anyone read this blog! Silly I know, but there has been no sign of anyone reading this for the couple of years I've been writing. It's not like I'm going to go private.

*****

Some old friends found me on Facebook. I'm thrilled about one, worried about the other. There's a reason I stopped interacting with her, and it's still in her life. I actually got chills down my spine, when I pressed the accept button. I don't think it will end well.

******

Bought Quantum Of Solace, used, off the Internet. I popped for the two discs version, about twice the money of the single disc version. Now, we are talking about under ten bucks here, (the shipping charges did bring it up to ten dollars). Right now this is a lot of money for me. I also bought Casino Royale (used), from another vendor at the same time. That costs about $3.50, I think.

Quantum Of Solace arrived yesterday. It was the single disk version! I promptly e-mailed the vendor through Amazon. They responded right away. They have credited both the charge and shipping cost back to me and I get to keep the DVD!

Now I have to decide whether I want to buy the two disc version. I have just found out that it doesn't apparently have what I wanted from the two disc version, which was a director's commentary. But it does have all the making of movie featurettes stuff on it. I've just read that the definite version of Quantum Of Solace is coming out with the director's commentary on it.

Casino Royale (which came today) doesn't have a director's commentary on it either, but it does have the special features on the second disk. I'm going to watch them, and see if that covers what I want.

Next post will be about my apparently undying lust for Daniel Craig. I will list all of his movies I have seen, own, etc!
